Paper 1: Comparing Two Arguments

For your first major paper in LING 100A, you will compare the arguments in the two articles you have read about the importance and role of a university education:

1. “Why College is Necessary But Gets You Nowhere” by Robert Reich. Published in Huffington Post, 2015.

2. “What Is College Good For? (Hint: More Than Just a Job)” by Charles Dorn. Published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2017

To compare these two articles, follow the directions below. Outline the different arguments, explaining how they either agree with or contradict one another. Also discuss any claims that are different but not directly contradictory. What are some of the reasons the authors give to justify their claims? How do they present their information and arguments?

Content and Organization

1. In your introduction, introduce the two publications (Huffington Post and The Chronicle of Higher Education), who their intended audience is, and the topics they discuss. Write about how the authors organize the texts and present their claims.

2. In your first internal paragraph(s), discuss i) Reich’s claim and ii) at least two problems or reasons that he writes about in the Post article. Provide specific evidence from the text to support your comments.

3. In your second internal paragraph(s), present i) Dorn’s claim and ii) at least two problems or reasons that he provides in the Chronicle article. Provide specific evidence from the article to support your comments.

4. In two or three additional paragraphs, compare/contrast the problems or reasons that each author discusses. Discuss the differences between the problems or reasons in each text and the ways they are presented in the two publications.

5. Conclude with a statement in which you sum up the similarities and differences between the two texts. You can mention not only claims and evidence, but also audience(s) and purpose(s).
